Spring has sprung! The flowers are blooming, and allergies are attacking. Beautiful weather gives way to severe thunderstorms. Think of the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” It is a nice thought until we realize what might accompany those showers. When we hear this phrase, I would guess the picture in our minds does not include the possible destruction from hail, flooding, damaging winds, or even tornadoes. Indeed, the spring season is a time for growth and renewal, but that isn’t always pleasant.
We often romanticize the spring season with all of its florals and pastels. But we forget that we must go through winter, which can sometimes be harsh before we get to spring. In order for the new to come, things must die (2 Corinthians 5:17). And even amid a season of growth, it is not without growing pains. I can certainly testify to that!
It is the same with seasons of life and our own spiritual growth. We tend to focus on the end result without thinking about what it takes to get there. However, whenever we experience growth and renewal, there is almost always some pain we must endure as we strive to become more like Christ and live a God-centered life. The Holy Spirit reveals idolatry or things in our life that must be removed or reprioritized as we draw nearer to God.
The call to follow Christ is a call to come and die. We are to take up our cross and die to ourselves daily (Luke 9:23). It is probably not the best way to start an evangelistic conversation, but it is the truth. Furthermore, when we are reborn and begin living for Jesus instead of living for ourselves, we will find an abundance and fullness of life that was missing before. As we continue to grow in our faith, we will experience difficult seasons when the storm clouds roll in, and we face trials and tribulations. We will be tested and stretched, but that is when growth and renewal happen (James 1:2-3).
During this spring season, let it also be a season of growth and renewal in your spiritual life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal those things that need to die so that new growth can begin. Then surrender it to God and allow Him to work. Perhaps you currently find yourself in a difficult season. Remember, God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose for them (Romans 8:28). Keep your eyes on the prize and trust in God’s promises. When we come out on the other side, we will be closer to Him and stronger in our faith. Spring provides a great opportunity to witness the beauty of God’s creation, both within ourselves and the world around us.
